I know the web is all abuzz and apparently Twitter was sending out Fail Whales like candy yesterday over him...but I can't keep myself from eulogizing one of the best musical minds of my generation. There is a reason everyone is talking about Micheal Jackson's death, he was genuinely one of the most talented artists of the last 50 years and easily one the most influential of all time. And like most pop singers he belongs in my song of the week list because pop music is almost always about sex either in the lyrics or the choreography.
It's funny, Jackson was never an artist that I listened to in any depth. I remember the Thriller video, and pretty much every hit after that until Black or White. I remember the glove, the ringlet, and the leather jacket from Beat It, but I never got the point. Watching his videos now, with a but of musical perspective, he was consumate in his performance, timing and the way be blended genres. Listen to The Way You Make Me Feel. This is a soul song but it doesn't sound like it, it's mood is totally different. He was able to transform the pop genre in ways that noone would have expected. And watch the video...the intro is incredibly hot, his timing and choreography convey everything you need to know without music or lyrics for the entire intro.
And who can talk about Micheal Jackson and his sex appeal without mentioning Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. Great song, and it showcases the young Micheal, who was a surprisingly hansom young man if you only knew him from the late 80's onward.
And then there is Billie Jean, one of his most catchy songs and the 80's lament on poor family planning...a song that was fairly controversial considering how obtuse the lyrics really are.
And as a testament to just how powerful a creative force he was, name me someone who can attract this kind of starpower these days, even for a tribute to another star? Certainly not Britney Spears. This is pretty much a cameo of every star from the 80's, wow!
And who could forget the moon walk...he was a master!
